3 Of the Best Sleep Tips from Physical Therapy
Our Boston Physical Therapists not only work on your joints, but also help you sleep better. Find out how;
Here at Ripple, our Physical Therapy is far from traditional.
If you're new to us, we are a direct pay Physical Therapy clinic located in the heart of Boston. Since we are a direct-pay clinic, we do much more than traditional Physical Therapy and help people get out of pain and improve their overall wellness plan. We do this by working from numerous buckets of a healthy lifestyle and ensuring that you're not just filling up one of those buckets. We're really the only place in Boston where you can come in to get your injury fixed and leave with a new workout routine, shooting lower scores on the golf course, and feeling like you're a totally new human being.
One of those buckets is how well your body manages stress. When people come in with pain, we don't just look at the how well your knee joint works because you have knee pain.
Our initial Physical Therapy assessment not only dives into how well your body moves, but we also chat about what's going on in life. Stressed from work? Got 3 kids running around while also trying to get your workouts in? Putting in 10 hour work days then dragging yourself through a high instnse workout class? All of this is stress on the body, and if you want to get out of pain we have to lessen your overall stress!
What's one of the best ways to reduce your stress levels? GET SOME SLEEP.
One of the best ways to reduce your pain and improve your performance is adequate sleep. Sexy, I know. But seriously, sleep might be the number 1 way to improve your overall health. Good sleep helps improve your mood, brain performance, and how well your body performs overall. For our Physical Therapy purposes here in Boston, we know that mixing sleep into a patients routine can single handled change how the body deals with pain and how well it can recover.
If you want to reduce your pain and increase your recovery, start with sleep. Here are the top three sleep tips from our Boston Physical Therapists:
Create a nighttime routine
Your body craves routine, and getting to sleep is no different. The two best things to add into your night time routine is 1) have a next day ritual -- this can be anything from journaling your to do list for tomorrows work day all the way to simply getting your clothes laid out. Taking next day thoughts out of your brain can do wonders to setting your mind at ease. 2) Put some mindless, phone-free TV on just before bed. Phoen free is the key here. Letting your mind and body decompress is critical to allowing your body to fall asleep as soon as you hit bed. My personal go-to is Friends
Get into bed at the same time every night
At least every week-night. This is really a follow-up on having a nighttime routine but it's so important it needed it's own shine. A lot of people will try to get to bed early if they had less sleep the night before and really this isn't the best advice. Once your body knows and understands that 10pm is bedtime, even if you have one bad night of sleep eventually you'll catch up. Find the 7-8 hour window that works for you and stick to it!
Buy an alarm clock
Do you get PTSD everytime you hear your iPhone alarm? Same. Let's get rid of those. Plus, if your iPhone is in the other room you're less likely to check your emails right before bed or fall into a doomscroll. We've all been there when you get into bed at the proper time and open TikTok for a quick second and all of a sudden it's 2am. Don't let that happen!
There's a huge rabbit hole on how to properly improve your sleep. A lot of time people will start buying these fancy mattresses, sleep machines, and other products that eventually cost them thousands of dollars when they're not doing the simple things properly.
