A quick glimpse into Physical Therapy for a Running Injury
‘Hip Flexor’ pain or a pinchy hip is a staple running injury for anyone getting started running, or upping their mileage. Running consists of thousands of hip flexion motions, so yeah, the hips is going to take a bit of a beating.
This video is a quick glimpse (note the word glimpse, not the whole session) into how our Physical Therapists go about evaluating, treating, and training with this issue. Everyone will of course be different, but we always start from square one and make sure the hip works like a hip.
Evaluating rotation is where we start. Does your active meet your passive? Do you even have passive? What’s the pelvis doing during flexion? All of these and more are questions that are not standard to all people. That’s why the evaluation is so important.
If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a thousand times; if the hip can’t rotate, it’s not actually a hip. That’s why we attack that FIRST.
From there, we get into treating the hip itself. Then, the most important part is using this newfound range of motion to put active internal inputs, ie exercise. Hips CARs are always taught and a range of another individual-specific exercise will be given for homework based on evaluating findings. Chances are, you prob just need to get stronger.
